As I contemplated on utilizing a key in this body of work, the idea of a key being used in place of a major social concept really interested me. This body of work developed from thinking about the social construct of the connection between lust, love, and sex and what those mean in our society today. The three components of human society are intertwined in everything around us. While they are constantly being spoken about, the twisted/distorted versions of each of these are only whispered in mainstream America. I wanted this key series to be relatable, debatable, and revealing. These works are tied together using a common “house” key, and how it is okay to go against the social norm and stand-alone at times. Love and sex were created to be beautiful things, but the world has corrupted their cores in many ways. The antique keys represent the beauty that still stands. While I implemented the use of similar hues throughout my utilization of this same common house key, I also wanted to create uniformity by incorporating consistent underlying principles throughout the body of work. This series works through the physical and mental challenges the body goes through when involved in any aspect of lust, love, and sex. The viewers are meant to look at each piece and place themselves in the spot of the key and see how positively or negatively their emotions react from personal experiences with the three components of this series. My artwork is not meant to find “solutions” to any problems that lust, love, and sex might have at their center, but instead are designed to cause the viewer to think and react. Reaction and awareness are the catalysts for change, and I hope my body of work gets people talking.
